Confused between the different types of ringtone? That's not surprising as over the years the ringtones (sounds) that mobile phones as gone from a simple "beep beep" noise called monophonic tones, one tone played at a different pitch to produce a tune to Real Sounds. A ringtone is an excerpt of a musical composition embodied in a digital file and rendered into audio. Ringtones are stored in an end-user's mobile telephone, pager or other portable communications device and played whenever the device activates its ring or alert function (upon the arrival of a call, message, alarm, etc.
There are three basic types of ringtones:Monophonic as discussed above,Polyphonic Ringtones and Pre-Recorded Ringtones. Polyphonic Ringtones are, most commonly, standard MIDI sound files that are either monophonic, where the ringtones are recreated using standard single notes, or polyphonic, where notes can be played simultaneously creating harmony and/or counterpoint. Pre-Recorded ringtones play actual clips from sound recordings. It should be noted that the term 'Pre-Recorded ringtone' is not the standard term industry-wide. They are also known as True tones Real Sounds, Hi Fi Sounds, Song tones, Master Ringtones, etc.
The revolution from polyphonic to monophonic took consumers by storm. Instead of listening to a series of beeps every time their phone received a call they could now actually here what could be called “music”. Polyphonic phones have a library of different instruments, which can include guitar, piano, trumpets, drums etc, it all depends on the make and model of your phone. Just like monophonic ringtones, each of these can be altered in frequency, but only a certain number of notes can be played simultaneously. Some mobile phones can play only 4 notes at the same time and are described as being compatible with 4 channel polyphonic ringtones, other mobile phones can play 16 notes (16 channel polyphonic ringtone compatible) and even 40 notes (40 channel polyphonic ringtone compatible) at the same time. The number of channels and type of instruments stored on mobile phones vary from model to model. |
